Standards Norway (SN) is a private and independent member organisation, and is one out of three standardisation bodies in Norway. Standards Norway is responsible for standardisation activities in all areas except the electrotechnical field and the telecommunications field.
The organisation was established the 24 June 2003 with roots dating back to 1923. Standards Norway has approx. 75 employees and is located at Lysaker in the western part of Oslo.
Standards Norway is the national member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Standards Norway holds a seat on the boards of these organisations.
Each year, Standards Norway publishes about 1 200 new Norwegian Standards (NS). Norwegian Standards are established on the basis of national draft standards as well as on the basis of European and International Standards. Currently, more than 17 000 valid NS exist.
Financial support
Standards Norway’s income is based on the sales of standards and related products, grants from the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry, membership subscriptions and financial support for specific projects. Standards Norway received a grant of NOK 32 million from the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2018.
Sales and marketing activities are conducted by Standard Online AS, of which Standards Norway is the major shareholder holding 80 % of the shares. Royalty from Standard Online AS amounted in 2018 to NOK 68 million. The income from Standard Online AS shall cover Standards Norway’s expenses related to the preparation of standards.
Participation on standardisation
Of the about 3 000 Norwegian voluntary experts involved in standardisation work over 900 participate in the international committees and working groups. Business and industry is heavily involved in the standardisation work, but representatives from the public sector, trade unions and consumer organisations also take part in Norway’s international standardisation work. The voluntary input of resources is estimated to be worth more than NOK 120 - 150 million per year.
